Outlander 111 The Devil’s Mark Recap
Claire and Geillis face charges of witchcraft. Ned Gowan comes to their defence, but witnesses, including Laoghaire and Father Bain, testify against them, and they are found guilty. Before Jamie can fight his way out of the courtroom with his wife, Geillis confesses and exonerates Claire. Claire recognises from the smallpox vaccine scar on Geillis’s shoulder that she too is from the future. Geillis is taken to be burned at the stake. When Jamie asks Claire about her scar, she tells him of her time travel. He believes her, takes her back to Craigh na Dun, and wishes her well in returning to her own time. But Claire decides not to go back.
Both Geillis and Claire have been imprisoned awaiting their trial for witchcraft. They are in a hole in the ground. Geillis confesses to Claire that she poisoned her husband Arthur, which isn’t much of a surprise. But, she also admits that she is, along with Dougal, raising funds for the Jacobite rebellion. The trial itself is a very one-sided affair until Ned Gowan arrives in time to attempt to provide a legal defense. The witnesses against them include Geillis’ housemaid, a woman who bought a love potion from her, Father Bain and Laoghaire who claims Claire stole Jamie from her with magic. As the trial comes to an end, Ned tells the two women that the only solution is for Claire to save herself by denouncing Geillis. She refuses to do so but Geillis saves her – and reveals her great secret. Jamie arrives to rescue Claire, he takes her from the court. While Jamie is soothing her back which has been whipped, Claire reveals the truth about her past.
